Varjo Unveils XR-4 Series: The Next Frontier in Immersive Mixed Reality

Finnish industrial VR/XR hardware manufacturer Varjo launches its latest generation mixed-reality headset, promising virtual and mixed reality experiences that rival natural sight.

Varjo, the Finnish industrial VR/XR hardware manufacturer, has announced the release of its XR-4 series, the next generation of its mixed-reality headset. The XR-4 promises to deliver virtual and mixed reality experiences that are practically indistinguishable from natural sight. Varjo’s immersive technology has already gained traction among Fortune 100 companies, enabling them to transform training, production, medical breakthroughs, and visualization for various industries. With the XR-4, Varjo aims to bridge the gap between human vision and computer vision, propelling the mixed reality industry forward.

A Significant Upgrade in Immersive Technology

The XR-4 series represents a significant upgrade from its predecessor, with improvements in visual quality and functionality. Equipped with 20-MP front-facing cameras, the XR-4 offers high-fidelity pass-through visuals on dual 4K mini-LED displays. The headset provides photorealistic visuals with a resolution of 51 pixels per degree, covering a field of view of 120 x 105 degrees. It boasts a brightness of 200 nits, a refresh rate of 90 Hz, and eye tracking at 200 Hz. The XR-4 also offers coverage of 98% of the sRGB color gamut and 96% of DCI-P3.

Realistic Mixed Reality Experience

To create an immersive experience that mimics natural sight, the XR-4 utilizes low-latency 20-megapixel front-mounted cameras. These cameras enable high-fidelity, mixed-reality pass-through, allowing virtual content to be seamlessly integrated. The Focal Edition of the XR-4 features gaze-directed autofocus and improved resolution, making it ideal for cockpit-based applications—an industry first. Additionally, the headset incorporates LiDAR depth sensing with a range of 7 meters, delivering eight times the resolution of the previous generation. New ambient light sensors and integrated DTS spatial audio with noise-canceling microphones enhance the realism of the experience.
